Spread Smiles Around the World!

Every three minutes a child somewhere in the world is born with a facial deformity. One in ten will not survive to see their first birthday. Those who do survive often live in isolation and pain. More than 100,000 children are born with a facial deformity each year in Operation Smile’s 26 partner countries.

We thought you would want to know about a very special promotion we will be participating in with an elite group of photographers from around the country to help these children.  On April 6, 2013 we will host “Celebration of Smiles Day” a wonderful opportunity for you to update individual portraits of your family members and at the same time support the work of Operation Smile, which treats children around the world who suffer with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

Recording the smiles of children and their families is our greatest pleasure. That’s why we believe so strongly in the work of Operation Smile. Each year this incredible organization of more than 5,000 volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and specialized health care professionals, perform free reconstructive surgeries for children suffering with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

Along with other participating members of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), we have pledged to donate 100% of each $24 donation made to PPA Charities, which has chosen Operation Smile as its charitable partner.

Call 917-669-3711 today to join with us in helping to make this vital work possible.

Additional details about the Celebration of Smiles event is also available here or click above on Celebration of Smiles.

As always . . . we look forward to creating some truly wonderful portraits of you or your family members.

Twins, Toddlers, and 'Tis the Season!

Ribbons and tissue paper have been flying around the studio as we prepare holiday orders complete with gifts, holiday cards, and fine art wall portraits for the home.  It is a busy but envigorating time.  I love seeing all of the smiling families and children as deliveries are prepared with care.  And the past few months have been filled with sessions in the park, at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, at families' homes, and here at the studio.  Some last minute orders have even come in from sessions we did in the spring!  It makes this time of year that much more magical for me.

From twin babies to families, teenagers and physicians, we have had such fun this year.  I cannot believe it is already drawing to a close and that our own baby girl has already been with us for a full year.  Being a mother has brought another level of meaning to my work as a photographer -- it would be hard to love it more than I always have, but I have enjoyed sharing experiences with the parents with whom I work.  I am grateful for the endless advice I have recieved, to have been able to connect personally with other first time parents, and to share in the magic that comes with starting, growing, and nurturing family.  Thank you to everyone who has continued to be a part of the studio's family and to those who have joined our community this year.  Wishing all a happy and healthy holiday season filled with smiles, sincerity, and the many faces of family.

This Halloween we are thinking of our friends and families here at the studio and hoping that all are out of harm's way and recovering from the powerful storm that impacted so many in our community.

May we all find smiles and relief in the adorable creatures and good spirits lurking around this Halloween.

Deeper Meaning

Since officially returning to work this spring, we have had a busy few months.  It feels great to be back and I have a totally new appreciation for my work.  I have been photographing Martina every week since she was born – admittedly some weeks have been more thorough shoots than others – but I never tire of viewing the portraits and being awestruck at how this little person has already changed so much, both physically and in her “little-big” personality.  I have witnessed it for years in the children of my clients, but it hits me that much more viscerally when I watch Martina’s infancy go flashing by.  The portraits we take of her help to capture those different baby-eras, milestones, and the magic of discovery that characterize the first year.  It also helps me to enjoy those expressions that – I feel guilty to admit – I sometimes miss because I am so preoccupied with work, cooking, tidying, or just trying to get us all out of the house.

In addition to my new role as a mother inspiring my understanding of the meaning of family portraiture, these recent months have been marked by fine art portrait experiences coinciding with transitional times for families: moves to and from Brooklyn, children getting ready to go off to college, families growing as they prepare for the arrival of new children and celebrate the last pregnancy….When I asked one mother why she was moved to do this fine art portrait experience she said to me, “you never know when they will come home again.”  I got goose bumps as she was reflecting on her children leaving the nest.

Having Martina makes me appreciate my work so much more and, in turn, my work and my families make me appreciate my own family in new powerful ways.

Family. Fun. Memories. Magic.  That phrase truly captures the meaning of what we do here at the studio and I am so lucky to live each one of those elements of a fortunate life at work and at home everyday.

I start each day by giving thanks for all of the many great fortunes that I have in my life -- from friends and family, to the imminent arrival of the new addition to our family, to having the opportunity to work at what I love with an incredible community....the list goes on and on.  Tomorrow I will take an extra moment to reflect on the many wonderful reasons I have to give thanks, on Thanksgiving and everyday.  Wishing you and your family a peaceful, warm Thanksgiving holiday filled with love, joy, happiness, and whatever special celebration makes you smile inside and out.

Enjoy the beauty of the day and the season.
